Beloveds,
We are Church Together at a time when our world is suffering the painful consequences of war and conflict. Death tolls in Gaza, Ukraine, Myanmar, and the Sudan continue to climb, and the potential for ever more violence feels close by as nationalism and xenophobia continue to gain footholds across the world.
In these moments, it is helpful to ground ourselves again in the Gospel, in the clear understanding of God’s grace, love, and justice, and to reaffirm our commitment to peacemaking as people set free by the One who has promised an eternal peace. This Sunday, many of us will read from John’s Gospel, recalling Jesus’ appearance among his disciples, hidden and afraid of the power and violence outside the walls of their room. But Jesus spoke to them, saying “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” This call is ours as well. We too have been sent, to be peacemakers in our communities.
At our 2024 Synod Assembly, the members of the Minneapolis Area Synod recommitted ourselves to seek and pursue peace in our communities and around the world. And we committed to sharing resources from the ELCA to help us explore our call to be peacemakers, including the ELCA’s Social Statement “For Peace in God’s World”. We’ve attached this important document, and both leader and participant guides for conversation and discernment, and hope that its study may invigorate your own call to be peacemakers.
In this time where peace feels so far away, we remember that… “God’s steadfast resolve for peace encompasses our time as it does all times. In creation and redemption, through Law and Gospel, God’s faithful love acts for peace.” (For Peace in God’s World, p.3).
Peace be with you,
Bishop Jen Nagel
