We are a global church with partnerships throughout the world. The Minneapolis Area Synod is fortunate to have two Companion Synods: the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria and the Leipzig District of the Lutheran Church in Saxony, Germany.

Where the ELCA works

The ELCA model for Global Mission is Accompaniment  — central to which is the priority we place on relationship — that relationship which God has intended for us since the beginning of the world. When we walk together, we need to be able to talk honestly, to share with one another, to get to know one another — to undo the boundary of strangeness or suspicion between us. It takes time, thought, and commitment to learn to see how we create boundaries, to perceive the asymmetries in our relationships, and to respond to them from Christ’s reconciling mission.

Core Accompaniment Values

  • Mutually: All of us have gifts to support God’s mission. There is no mission to, only mission with and among.
  • Inclusively: We seek to build relationships across boundaries that exclude and divide.
  • Vulnerably: Just as Jesus became vulnerable to us, we open ourselves to others.
  • Empowering: We seek to identify and correct imbalances of power, which may mean recognizing and letting go of our own.
  • Sustainably: To ensure local ministries last for a long time, we seek to embed mission in ongoing relationships and communities.
