The Rev. Jen Nagel was elected as the fourth bishop in the history of the Minneapolis Area Synod on May 4. Bishop-elect Nagel currently serves as the lead pastor at University Lutheran Church of Hope, Minneapolis.
Nagel was elected on the fifth ballot with 316 votes (68%). Explaining her strong support, Nagel said, “I am humbled and excited by this new role and the trust of the synod’s voting members. The church is at an inflection point. We don’t know where the Holy Spirit is taking that, and that can cause anxiety. But, it can also provide hope. I think participants in the election process heard a message of reconnection, and that gives them hope.”
Bishop-elect Nagel is married to the Rev. Jane McBride, pastor of First Christian Church, a congregation of the United Church of Christ, a denomination with which the ELCA shares a “full communion partnership.” They have two tweenish-age children.
Bishop-elect Nagel begin her new role on August 1. Bishop Ann Svennungsen will retire on July 31, having served two six-year terms.
